SE13 Storm over the Preseli Hills

SE13 - Storm over the Preseli Hills

PEN CAER (ii) and STORM OVER THE PRESELI HILLS are two views from near our old home at Mabws Fawr (see immediately below). Pen Caer is the headland to the bay that forms Goodwick, and is surmounted by Garn Fawr, mentioned previously. Seen in the right light, the foreground really is a swirling mass of curves and colour. This image was used by the Council for the Protection of Rural Wales, as a greetings card. The second image shows the actual colour of the sky one May evening a few years ago, just preceding one of those awesome thunderstorms that show the power of nature at its most magnificent.

SE14 Mabws FawrI(ii)

SE14 - Mabws FawrI(ii)

'MABWS FAWR' is the view from the main road, the A487, from Saint Davids to Fishguard, (seen by standing in front of bus stop and looking south across the valley, to be precise) just below Mathry. Nicola and I had seen the triangular woods many time before we went to live there, even before the barn conversions took place. We could see the old farmhouse (which became the studio and gallery rooms) in the woods, and often wondered who lived there, little knowing that one day it would be us. When we heard it was for sale we tried to buy it, but couldn’t afford it, but a couple of years later, after the barns were converted, the price was reduced, we had a little more money, and our bank manager Steve was kind to us…so we lived there for a few years, clearing streams and making paths through the woods.

SE15 Self-Portrait of the Artist entering a field of colourful flowers

SE15 - Self-Portrait of the Artist entering a field of colourful flowers

'SELF-PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST ENTERING A FIELD OF COLOURFUL FLOWERS' is a view seen by Nicola from the kitchen window at Plas y Mabws, looking towards the north. I’m not an early riser, but on one occasion I was awake and out sketching quite early when the early-morning sun shone on the stile, highlighting it as I climbed over it into the field adjoining the woods. Nicola saw me and suggested the painting. The result is what you see, or very nearly. On some of the leaflets the colour of my shirt is brown , but I’ve changed it to light blue because Nicola bought me a shirt of that colour from Liberty on one of our very rare trips to London. I also think it makes the figure clearer.

SE16 BARN IN A RAPESEED FIELD

SE16 - BARN IN A RAPESEED FIELD

BARN IN A RAPESEED FIELD has a strange history. I first saw the real life barn in a rapeseed field in South Glamorgan, and captured the image in my mind. I then forgot about it until I saw the identical thing (or very similar) on the South or North Downs, and decided to produce it as an original print, which was printed by Advanced Graphics in London. They had just moved to new workshops close to The Elephant and Castle, which is very close to where I lived for a time as a child. As you can see, they made a very good job of it.
