SE01 Porthclais

SE01 - Porthclais

PORTHCLAIS is a little harbour I have painted a number of times in various media and styles. On this occasion I chose to formalize the shapes in order to accentuate them. Graham Sutherland painted a semi-abstract picture of Porthclais from a nearby viewpoint, and I have taken a number of classes there when working as visiting lecturer to his collection. It is quite a magic spot, which was once a very busy harbour, and is said to be the place where the wild boar from the Mabinogion came ashore, and also where the purple sandstone for Saint Davids Cathedral was landed.

SE02 Melin Trefin

SE02 - Melin Trefin

MELIN TREFIN is on the coast road from Trefin to Saint Davids at a tiny inlet known as Aber Draw. Until early in this century it was a corn-mill, and there is a disused quarry and row of quarry workers' cottages nearby. I believe the cottages have been converted into one holiday cottage now; they must have been tiny before they were converted into one unit. A stone circle sits on top of a hillock, and because of the contours, seems to appear by magic on an ever-changing skyline when the viewer approaches. The artist Sarah Young, who exhibits and works with Nicola at the Saint Davids Studio Gallery, was brought up near here.

SE03 Felin Ganol

SE03 - Felin Ganol

The area upstream towards from Solva is FELIN GANOL, 'Middle Mill', with its little bridge across the river, a chapel on the side of the hill, and a quarry well-known for miles around for the quality of its stone. Needing some stone for a rock garden, I contacted Alun at the quarry, and my friend Desi brought a few ton to the house in his JCB. Whilst we were laying it, we discovered one large piece was distinctly different form the rest . It transpired that it was gouged on the sides, and a geologist told me it was brought to Middle Mill by a glacier, and had travelled many hundreds of miles. It is now in the centre of the garden as a standing stone.

SE04 Garn Fawr

SE04 - Garn Fawr

GARN FAWR is an old favourite of mine, and I have painted it many times. This view is from the car park, and shows the two cottages which belonged to John Piper, The one to the right was his studio, and to the left was his 'living cottage', complete with 'crog-loft', a kind of sleeping balcony in the eaves, reached by a ladder. I used to think it was ok for John, who was very tall, but I wondered how easy it was for Myfanwy, who was quite a bit shorter.

SE05 The Red Flash (i) Pen Caer

SE05 - The Red Flash (i) Pen Caer

NEARLY SOLD OUT. The "RED FLASH" is a rare and outstandingly beautiful phenomenon, occurring at different, and often isolated locations along the north coast of Pembrokeshire, and lasting only for a few seconds, four or five times at the most in any one year. During these fleeting occurrences, which occur invariably only at sunrise and sunset, over a distance of a few hundred yards, everything within that space upon which the light is cast, including the very air itself, appears to be suddenly bathed in a deep red glow, so strong that to the unknowing observer, it is quite awesome. When it first appears, it seems to burst with an intensity of light said by some to be "as blinding as the blackness of the night". It then disappears as suddenly as it appeared. But those who have witnessed it, describe the instant for which it exists, as a journey into the sublime. Its depiction by Stan Rosenthal is a revelation of that experience.
